Current Projects
The Alois Alzheimer Center is involved in research projects that examine
treatment methods designed to improve the quality of life for persons
with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia and to affect the disease
process itself. Projects range from developing tools and guidelines
for measuring the effectiveness of various programs and techniques, to
experimental drug treatment studies. To date more than 50 have
been or are currently being conducted at the Center. The Center
is often one of a few select sites in the nation chosen for Alzheimer’s
disease research projects, including the Aricept drug treatment study. Past
non-drug studies have involved studying the effect of hospitalization
on the rate of progression of Alzheimer’s disease, and identifying
successful techniques and support systems caregivers can apply while
working with individuals who have dementia. Participation in research
is entirely voluntary, and only performed with prior approval.
